The Day that Canvas Died

(Inspired by “American Pie” by Don McLean)

A Long, Long Time Ago

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how
Canvas used to make me smile.
And I knew if I logged in then,
I’d get my grades and check again,
And maybe I’d submit my work in style.

But early that October day,
The pages froze, then slipped away.
Bad news on the website—
I couldn’t click to save my life.
I can’t remember if I cried
When I saw the 404 inside,
But something hit me deep inside—
The day that Canvas died.

Bye, Bye to My Homework Online

So bye-bye to my homework online,
Clicked “submit” but it vanished in the AWS sky.
Those good ol’ clouds were running too high,
Singing, “This’ll be the day that I try…
This’ll be the day that I cry.”

Did You Write the Book of Grades

And do you trust the digital age?
If Canvas tells you so?
Do you believe in cloud salvation,
Or just temporary frustration,
Can AWS teach your soul to grow?

Well, I know that I was panicking,
’Cause my screen was stuck and buffering.
We both logged on and sighed—
Our group chat nearly fried.
I was a lonely student feeling blue,
With a laptop dying too,
But I knew we were all overdue—
The day that Canvas died.

We Started Singing…

Bye-bye to my homework online,
Clicked “submit” but it vanished in the AWS sky.
And good ol’ students were left high and dry,
Singing, “This’ll be the day that I try…
This’ll be the day that I cry.”

The Lesson Hidden in the Lyrics

Now the grades are back, the system’s fine,
But something changed in that downtime.
We learned that clouds can fall from grace,
And every crash leaves a trace.

The servers hum, the world moves on,
But we remember that silent dawn—
When every class, and every dream,
Was frozen in a loading screen.

So bye-bye, to my homework online,
Clicked “submit” but it vanished in the AWS sky.
And good ol’ students, laughing through the sigh,
Singing, “This’ll be the day that I try…
This’ll be the day that I cry.”
