Diving into Cartographic Design with ArcGIS Pro

I’m excited to share that I’m currently working through the Cartographic Creations in ArcGIS Pro learning path on Learn ArcGIS.
This series focuses on making maps that not only work, but also communicate by combining data, layout, symbology, charts, and narrative into a cohesive visual story. (learn.arcgis.com)

So far, I have tackled:

  • Styling thematic data using color, size, blend modes, and filters to express spatial patterns
  • Labeling layers in a clear and aesthetic way, and converting labels to annotation for more control
  • Arranging map elements such as map frame, title, guides, and legend into balanced layouts
  • Adding inset maps to highlight points of interest, such as the lowest ice extent

A few reflections:

  • Small details matter. Typography tweaks, alignment, and legend simplification greatly improve readability
  • Converting the legend to graphics provides more flexibility but requires extra effort
  • Integrating charts alongside maps adds context that a map alone cannot always show
  • Inset maps are powerful tools to spotlight anomalies or key trends

Next steps include finalizing the layout, refining the narrative text, and exporting the map for presentation. I also plan to make the map tell a story by guiding viewers through key views, zooms, and explanations.

If anyone wants to exchange notes or collaborate on cartographic best practices, I would be glad to connect.
