Fall Break Before Midterms: Borrowed Time, Not a Vacation

Fall break. That shiny pause in the calendar that we celebrate like we’ve just been granted a royal pardon. Reality check: it isn’t a vacation, it’s a brief gasp of air before the exam machine tightens its grip. And let’s not sugarcoat it: midterms don’t just loom, they stalk us. For some of us, the very thought of them sparks anxiety, panic, and that familiar tightness in the chest that no amount of coffee or breathing exercises can fully fix.

The Myth of Rest and Recovery

We hear the gospel of “self-care” this week. Sleep more, recharge, binge on Netflix, maybe post an inspirational quote about balance. Sounds good, right? Until we realize balance is a luxury only the prepared can afford. If we’ve been slacking since week one, this isn’t self-care, it’s denial in disguise. But here’s the cruel irony: even the prepared among us aren’t immune to the anxiety. Fall break becomes a negotiation between trying to rest and wrestling with the mental noise that won’t let us.

The Crammer’s Fantasy

Then there are the crammers. Fall break turns into a manic sprint: read, write, memorize, pray. We call it focus, but really it’s panic poured into a coffee cup. Anxiety fuels every all-nighter, convincing us that if we push harder, the fear will go away. It doesn’t. It just shapeshifts into exhaustion. And midterms, heartless as they are, reward consistency, not adrenaline.

The Truth About Fall Break

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Fall break is borrowed time. It isn’t designed to fix us, it’s there to test us. To see how we manage our discipline, our nerves, and yes, even our panic attacks. Some of us sharpen our edge, others dull it. Some of us spend it fighting anxiety more than formulas or essay outlines. Either way, the wolves are waiting.

Midterms Don’t Grade Pity

At the end of the day, midterms don’t grade how anxious we felt or how many panic attacks we fought through. They don’t care if we journaled, meditated, or sobbed into our ramen. Midterms grade preparation, not pity. They measure what we’ve done, not what we’ve survived. And that’s the hardest part to swallow.

So enjoy your Fall break, in whatever way helps you survive it. But don’t mistake it for safety. It’s not protection, it’s just a checkpoint on the way to the real fight.
